Irrigation equipment and farm planning in Mwea and Kirinyaga

Mwea is well known for its large rice irrigation scheme, where basin irrigation is the established method. Kirinyaga also has horticultural and upland crop production. DripTech Eco Flow helps assess equipment for suitable vegetable, orchard, nursery and other non-paddy crop layouts.

Understand the existing irrigation method

The Mwea Irrigation Scheme primarily produces rice using basin irrigation and water conveyed through scheme infrastructure. A drip kit is not a substitute for the scheme's paddy-field layout. For tomatoes, French beans and other horticultural blocks outside or alongside paddy production, a separate drip or sprinkler design may be appropriate after checking the crop and water arrangements.

Before recommending equipment, confirm whether the farm is within a managed irrigation scheme, uses an individual water source, or operates an upland block with a separate supply.

Select components for horticultural blocks

  • Confirm water access, allocated supply conditions and when water is available.
  • Match dripline spacing and number of lines per bed to the crop and row arrangement.
  • Check filtration requirements for the source and the emitter specification.
  • Size pumps and pipes only where the farm's water supply requires pumping.
  • Separate horticultural blocks into zones where crop schedules or water needs differ.

DripTech equipment and support

DripTech supplies driplines, drip tape, filters, pumps, sprinklers, valves, pipes, fittings and fertigation components. We can help prepare a parts list for a separate horticultural irrigation system.

For farms inside a public scheme, confirm the scheme's water-use rules and infrastructure responsibilities with the relevant scheme management. DripTech is not the operator of the Mwea Irrigation Scheme.

Request a Kirinyaga irrigation recommendation

Send the sub-county or area, crop, plot size, water source and whether the field is within the Mwea scheme or an independent farm. A sketch showing the intake, water point and field layout will help avoid quoting for the wrong irrigation method.
