Irrigation system startup and commissioning checklist

A system should be checked before routine irrigation begins and after major repairs or upgrades. Commissioning confirms that components are installed correctly and that each zone operates within its intended conditions.

Before switching on

  • Confirm installation matches the approved layout and equipment schedule
  • Check valves, fittings, pipe supports and electrical protection
  • Confirm water source and pump operating limits
  • Ensure filters are installed and ready for cleaning
  • Identify zones, isolation valves and flushing points

Flush and inspect

Flush mainlines, submains and laterals in a controlled sequence according to the system design and component instructions. Keep flushing outlets accessible and avoid sending debris into emitters or sprinklers.

Inspect joints, filters, valves and end closures for leaks or blockages. Never exceed component pressure ratings during testing.

Test each zone

  • Run zones individually as designed
  • Record inlet and end-of-line pressure where measurement points exist
  • Check uniform operation and obvious dry or over-watered areas
  • Inspect sprinkler rotation/coverage or dripline discharge
  • Verify pump behaviour, controls and protection
  • Correct leaks, air issues, blockages or pressure problems before handover

Handover and maintenance records

Record equipment models, settings, pressure readings, zone sequence and maintenance tasks. Show operators how to start, stop, isolate, clean filters and report faults.

Commissioning results should be compared with the design and manufacturer specifications. Persistent deviations need investigation rather than simply increasing pump pressure.
