Troubleshooting low pressure and weak sprinkler coverage

Weak sprinkler throw or low flow at the far end of a field can have several causes. Check the supply and distribution system methodically; a larger pump is not always the right fix.

Check the water supply and system condition

  • Confirm the source has enough water during irrigation
  • Inspect filters, valves and pipework for blockage or accidental restriction
  • Look for leaks and damaged connections
  • Check whether too many sprinklers or zones are operating at once
  • Compare the installed sprinkler requirements with the available operating pressure and flow

Verify pump and pipe sizing

Pump selection depends on required flow at the total dynamic head, including elevation and friction losses. Read the pump curve and sprinkler specifications rather than relying on the motor power rating alone. Pipe diameter, line length and fittings also affect pressure losses.

Do not adjust pressure controls beyond equipment limits. If pressure remains low, have the pump, layout and measured operating conditions checked before replacing equipment.

Information to collect for a diagnosis

  • Pump make and model, if available
  • Number and type of sprinklers operating together
  • Approximate pipe sizes and longest run
  • Water source and elevation difference
  • Where pressure or coverage becomes weak
