Irrigation systems and equipment in Kisumu

Kisumu County has established irrigated rice-growing areas as well as farms producing vegetables and other crops. DripTech Eco Flow helps assess the right equipment for each site, taking account of crop layout, water source, pressure, filtration and field conditions.

Match the irrigation method to the field

Ahero and West Kano are established rice irrigation schemes where basin irrigation is used. Those large scheme layouts are not interchangeable with a drip kit for a smaller vegetable plot, orchard or greenhouse. The system should be selected for the actual crop and field rather than assuming one method suits every farm.

For row vegetables and horticultural crops, drip irrigation may be appropriate where rows, soil and water supply support it. Sprinklers can suit other coverage needs, including some nurseries and open plots. The choice should follow a site assessment.

Water source and filtration need attention

The Ahero scheme draws irrigation water from River Nyando, while West Kano abstracts water from Lake Victoria. Farms using river, lake, dam or other surface-water sources should assess the water before selecting a filter. Sediment and organic material can affect emitter performance and maintenance requirements.

Pump selection should account for the required flow, operating pressure, elevation and pipe losses—not only the size of the farm.

Equipment for Kisumu farms

  • Driplines, drip tape and emitters for suitable row-crop layouts
  • Disc or screen filtration selected for the actual water source
  • Pumps, pipes, valves and fittings sized for the design flow and pressure
  • Sprinklers and rain guns where the crop and coverage pattern call for them
  • Fertigation components where nutrient injection is part of the farm plan

Share your area, crop, acreage, water source and whether the field is already served by an irrigation scheme. A photo of the intake, tank, pump or field layout is useful. DripTech can help identify the checks required before a final design and quotation.
