How to size a pump for farm irrigation
Pump selection should be based on the flow the irrigation system needs and the total head the pump must overcome. Choosing by horsepower alone can lead to a system that does not deliver the required flow or pressure.
Inputs needed for pump selection
- Required flow rate for the zones operating at one time
- Vertical lift and delivery height
- Pressure required by the irrigation equipment
- Pipe lengths, diameters and friction losses
- Water-source depth, yield and available power supply
Match the pump to the application
Drip and sprinkler systems can have different flow and pressure requirements. Borehole pumps also need to be matched to the water level, borehole yield and delivery conditions; a borehole yield test is an important input.
For solar pumping, consider daily water volume, available sunlight, pumping window and any storage needed. Confirm calculations with the pump performance curve and a qualified installer.
