How to troubleshoot irrigation leaks and damaged fittings

Leaks waste water and can reduce delivery to other parts of an irrigation system. Identify the damaged section and relieve pressure before inspecting or repairing pipes and fittings.

Locate the leak and isolate the affected section

  • Switch off the pump or water supply and safely release system pressure
  • Inspect joints, valves, connectors and visible pipe sections
  • Look for cracked fittings, loose connections, damaged seals or pipe punctures
  • Check whether movement, sunlight exposure or unsupported pipework may have contributed
  • After repair, restart gradually and inspect the joint for leaks

Choose compatible replacement parts

Match the pipe diameter, pressure rating, connection type and material. A fitting that looks similar may not seal correctly or withstand the system's operating pressure. Use components within the manufacturer's specifications and seek qualified help for buried, high-pressure or repeatedly failing sections.

Reduce repeat failures

  • Support exposed pipework where needed
  • Avoid forcing mismatched threads or connectors
  • Protect equipment from avoidable impact and excessive pressure
  • Include valves and joints in routine inspections
