Troubleshooting irrigation filter and pump problems

Filters and pumps perform different jobs: filtration protects downstream equipment, while the pump or source must provide the flow and pressure the system needs. Symptoms should be checked against both components and the pipe layout.

If the filter blocks repeatedly

  • Check whether source water contains sand, organic matter or other suspended material
  • Clean the filter only as described by the manufacturer
  • Check that the filter type and rating are appropriate for the source and emitters
  • Investigate whether the intake or source has changed

If the pump flow is reduced or stops

  • Confirm the source has adequate water and the intake is not obstructed
  • Check for visible leaks, closed valves and blocked filters
  • Record any alarms or unusual changes without opening electrical or pressurised equipment
  • Compare the pump model and operating conditions with its manufacturer guidance

Know when to call a qualified technician

Electrical faults, borehole pump removal, persistent loss of prime, overheating, abnormal noise or pressure-vessel problems require appropriate qualified service. Do not open electrical equipment or dismantle a pump while it is powered or pressurised.

Share the pump model, water source, symptom, affected zones and recent changes to help the support team understand the issue.
