Drip vs sprinkler irrigation: how to choose in Kenya

Drip and sprinkler systems apply water differently, and neither is automatically best for every farm. The right option depends on crop arrangement, soil, wind exposure, water quality, available flow, labour and the way the field is managed.

When drip irrigation may fit

Drip systems deliver water through emitters near the crop rows or root zone. They can suit row crops, many vegetable beds, orchards and some greenhouse layouts when filtration, pressure and maintenance are handled correctly.

Dripline spacing, emitter flow, filtration and line length must match the field design. Blockages and poor pressure management can reduce uniformity, so routine checks matter.

When sprinklers may fit

Sprinklers distribute water over an area and can suit crops or layouts that benefit from broader coverage. Their performance depends on operating pressure, sprinkler spacing, wind and the application rate relative to soil intake.

Sprinkler systems need compatible pumps, pipes and fittings. Wind and evaporation can affect application, so site conditions and crop needs should be assessed before selection.
