Irrigation planning for coffee farms in Kenya

Coffee irrigation needs depend on location, rainfall pattern, soil, tree age and farm management. A practical system starts with a reliable water source and a layout that can be maintained as the farm develops.

Assess the coffee block first

Map the planted area, tree spacing, slope and distance to the water source. Estimate the required flow and consider whether the block should be divided into zones to fit the available supply.

The application method and emitter placement should be selected for the orchard layout, soil and local agronomic guidance. Avoid assuming that one setup is appropriate for every coffee-growing area.

Equipment to plan for

  • Water source, storage and pump capacity
  • Filtration appropriate to the water and emitter specification
  • Mainline, submain, valves and compatible connectors
  • Emitters or dripline matched to tree layout
  • Flush points and safe maintenance access

Get advice for your farm

Monitor soil moisture and crop conditions and follow locally appropriate agronomic advice when deciding irrigation timing. Inspect filters, leaks and emitters regularly.
