Drip irrigation for cabbage farming in Kenya
Cabbage irrigation planning begins with the spacing and arrangement of the crop, soil conditions, water source and the area to be irrigated. A properly sized system should deliver water evenly without guessing the line count or pump capacity.
Start with the planting layout
Measure the field and note row spacing, bed widths, elevation changes and the distance to the water source. The layout determines line lengths, total flow and whether the field needs separate irrigation zones.
Emitter spacing and discharge should suit the bed arrangement, soil and equipment pressure range. Confirm the design before purchasing a full kit.
A complete system needs more than dripline
- Dripline or drip tape selected for the crop layout
- Filtration appropriate to the water source
- Mainline, submain, valves and connectors
- A pump or tank connection that can supply the required pressure
- Flush points and access for cleaning
Maintenance and crop guidance
Check for leaks and uneven discharge, clean filters as instructed by the manufacturer and flush the system as recommended. Irrigation timing should be guided by crop stage, soil moisture, weather and local agronomic advice.
