Irrigation planning for avocado orchards in Kenya
An avocado irrigation system needs to reflect orchard age, tree spacing, soil, slope and the available water supply. The layout for young trees may differ from the system needed as the orchard canopy and root zone expand.
Plan around tree spacing and growth
Record row spacing, tree spacing, orchard area, elevation and distance from the water source. The design should allow suitable water application around each tree while leaving room to adjust the layout as trees mature.
The number and placement of emitters should be selected with the orchard design, soil and qualified agronomic advice in mind. Do not assume one emitter arrangement suits every tree or soil type.
Protect the system and plan for expansion
- Filter matched to source water and emitter specifications
- Mainline, submain, valves and connectors sized for planned flow
- Emitters or dripline suitable for the orchard layout
- Pump, tank and pressure arrangements checked against demand
- Flush points and maintenance access across orchard blocks
